Music and Psychoanalysis3-6 novembre 2016, Vancouver Deadline: 10 Dec 2015 The Music and Psychoanalysis Interest Group at the SMT invites SMT + AMS members to submit proposals for a joint AMS / SMT panel of papers at the Vancouver 2016 annual meeting on the topic of Music, Sound, and the Unconscious. We are open to submissions from a wide variety of psychoanalytic, musical-historical, music-theoretical, music-analytical perspectives, addressing diverse repertoire and cultural contexts. One appeal of psychoanalysis is the complex scaffolding it offers for thinking about our unconscious lives. Both the most elusive and accessible aspect of psychoanalysis, questions about the unconscious of an individual, group, or culture are at the fore of many musicological and music theoretical inquiries. Following this appraisal, the Music and Psychoanalysis Interest Group invites proposals for papers that intersect with music, sound, and the unconscious on a wide spectrum. Possible topics might include the Lacanian tripartite system Imaginary, Symbolic, Real; hermeneutic approaches that implicate psychoanalytic ideas; Freudian interpretations of dreams, slips of the tongue, and artworks, or other analytic approaches that seek to uncover unconscious or otherwise ineffable aspects of music. Please submit a 350 word abstract as a pdf containing: 1) the title of your proposed presentation, 2) the abstract itself, and 3) a bibliography. We will give priority to submissions sent to and received by David Bard-Schwarz (david.schwarz -at- unt.edu) and Clara Latham (clara.latham -at- gmail.com) by December 10, 2015.
