Feminist Theory and Music Feminism and Black Critical Praxis in an Age of Scarcity 2013

5-9 August 2015, Madison

Call for Proposals: Papers and Performances

Proposals are due February 6, 2015

The thirteenth meeting of the international, biennial conference Feminist Theory and Music will take place on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison 5-9 August 2015.  Jointly sponsored by the Center for Black Music Research, Columbia College, Chicago and the UW-Madison School of Music, the conference program will include presentations in a variety of formats.

The conference theme, Feminism and Black Critical Praxis in an Age of Scarcity, is in conversation with the 2013 theme, New Voices in the New Millennium, and seeks to explore the sustainability of feminist and critical race work in a new century marked by diminishing resources.  The program committee plans panels on the broad themes of gender, race and labor, public feminisms, institutions and difference, and theory as a transferrable skill.  The Program Committee especially seeks participants willing to engage substantively with the historical and contemporary contestations of race and gender.  Given the meeting's location and joint sponsorship, the Program Committee welcomes submissions that engage specifically with Chicago and the larger Midwest region as well as with the tensions of urban and rural identities.

The Program Committee likewise welcomes participants from within and without the academy and from any disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspective that addresses music in relation to the African Diaspora, diverse communities, feminism, gender, or sexuality.  Proposals focusing on current social issues and any area of music and gender are also encouraged. Proposals for 90 minute panels of various structures are also welcome. Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words for scholarly papers of 20 minutes in length. Proposals for panels should include the overall theme of the panel and individual abstracts of each presentation (presentation abstracts should be 250 words maximum). Please specify any AV or other equipment needs, although we may not be able to provide all requested equipment.

We also invite proposals for musical performances and lecture-recitals. Performances may be of varying lengths.  Lecture-recitals may not exceed 35 minutes in length.  Proposals for both performances and lecture-recitals should include the following: 1) an abstract no longer than 250 words; 2) requests for equipment or other needs; 3) length of the work or program; 5) brief biographies for any performers you will supply; 6) name(s) of work(s) to be performed; 7) if possible, links to mp3 samples of works. The Performance Committee will consider other proposal formats for alternative modes of presentation.

FTM 13 will take place at the UW-Madison Pyle Center with affordable lodging available at the Lowell Center, both located just blocks from the University's Library Mall and pedestrian thoroughfare, State Street, which offers multiple restaurant options at reasonable prices.  Madison's Dane County Regional Airport is served by all major airlines via easy connections in Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Detroit, and Chicago, and the Madison Metro Transit service connects the airport with the campus area.  The Van Galder and Badger Bus Lines also provide regular connections between O'Hare and Mitchell (Milwaukee) Airports and the UW-Madison campus

Please send all proposals to feministtheoryandmusic at gmail.com on or before February 6, 2015. Direct questions about the conference program to Julia J. Chybowski, chybowsj at uwosh.edu.  Any other conference questions can be directed to Susan C. Cook, sccook at wisc.edu.
