Bone Flute to Auto-Tune: A Conference on Music & Technology in History, Theory and Practice

24-26 avril 2014, University of California, Berkeley

CALL FOR PAPERS

What shapes our music technologies? How do our technologies shape our musical practices and thought? An exciting body of scholarship has addressed such questions for sound recording, electronic instruments and digital media, illuminating the development and adoption of new technologies and their consequences for the creation, circulation, consumption and conception of music. Yet older technologies too were once new – and new technologies often revive or perpetuate old values, compromises and assumptions in unrecognized ways. This conference aims to question and illuminate the acoustic/electronic and analog/digital divides by addressing “new” music technologies from across history, from notation systems to sound recording, string instruments to synthesizers, carillons to computers, metronomes to MIDI – from bone flute to auto-tune. The conference also aims to open up dialogues between past and current practice by bringing together scholars, musicians and inventors from the Bay/Sili con Valley Area and beyond.

Proposals for presentations addressing music and technology from a variety of critical and disciplinary perspectives are invited. Please submit a 300-word abstract for a 20-minute presentation to dloughridge at berkeley.edu by October 25, 2013.

Conference participants include Georgina Born (Professor of Music and Anthropology, Oxford University), Adrian Freed (Research Director, CNMAT) and Roger Moseley (Assistant Professor of Music, Cornell University). For updated information, please visit us.

Early Modern Soundscapes

24-25 avril 2014, Bangor University, Bangor, Wales, United Kingdom.

Deadline: December 1 2013
https://www.bangor.ac.uk/english/Soundscapes

To include the Society for Renaissance Studies Third Annual Welsh Lecture, given by Professor Jennifer Richards (Newcastle University) and Professor Richard Wistreich (Royal Northern College of Music)

Early modern culture was awash with sounds. From psalm singing to tavern songs to the reading of the riot act or town criers announcing noteworthy news, we are presented with an image of oral culture forming the basis of perpetual interaction between individuals and their communities. Music, in particular, forms a backdrop to the soundscape, negotiating abstract sounds and speech. This two-day symposium will interrogate ways of conceiving the early modern soundscape. Topics might include (but are not limited to) the following:

· Sounds and space
· Sounds sacred
· Sounds profane
· Civic noise
· Imagined soundscapes
· Interaction between sound and speech communities
· Oral and literate cultures
· Music and performance culture
· Sounds and medicine
· Sounds and the senses
· The relationship between words and music

We welcome abstracts of not more than 250 words for twenty-minute papers, or proposals for panels comprising three papers, to be sent to Rachel Willie (r.willie at bangor.ac.uk) by December 1st 2013.

Le baryton Ludovic Tézier, le ténor Ramon Vargas et la basse Alexander Vinogradov font triompher « Ernani » à l'Opéra de Monte-Carlo

plume Par Jean-Luc Vannier ——
